About Us

Founded in 1904, Black River Falls Municipal Utilities (BRFMU) is a municipally owned and operated electric, water, and sewer utility, serving more than 2,700 customers in Black River Falls, Wisconsin. We strive to provide low-cost, reliable service with a community-focused, personal touch. We are your friends and neighbors who share your values and understand your needs.

While a lot has changed over the past century, the focus of the utility has not. Today, we still offer our customers competitive electric rates – rates significantly lower than those in territories that are served by most investor-owned utilities. And, since we live and work in the community, we provide reliable energy with superior customer service. BRFMU also owns and operates a hydroelectric dam with a generation capacity of 1.47 MW, enough to power 10-12% of our customers needs.

BRFMU also provides our customers with clean, high-quality water that meets or exceeds all state and federal standards. Our water quality and capacity are monitored every day by well-trained system operators.

Lastly, BRFMU operates the WWTP, which provides wastewater treatment for all of BRFMU customers and the Brockway Sanitary District. The City Street Department manages and maintains the sanitary sewer collection system.

Value of Public Power

The City of Black River Falls owns and operates its own local utility and has long been committed to helping make our community a great place to live and work. As a public power community, we are in the business of meeting customers’ needs and providing a higher level of service.

Economic Development

We know that electric costs can be a significant part of your business’s operating budget. Community-owned utilities like us tend to have lower electric rates than nearby investor-owned utilities. Simply put, doing business here – in a public power community – just makes sense.

Local Ownership

Black River Falls Municipal Utilities is dedicated to meeting our customers’ needs while helping to make the community a better place to live and work. We are one of the country’s 2,200 public power systems – a utility owned by the community it serves.
